I suspect they're Dodonea, Con. Rosemary B

There's been a cluster of Dodonea in that area for decades. Some also occur up to 70m away from the site. You've captured the colours beautifully Con.

Thank you. It was nice to see a patch of native shrubs after all the Cootamundra Wattles!

The Mt Rogers Landcare Group values Cootamundra Wattles for their lifetime of value to wildlife. People enjoy their spring flowering. As the 65 hectare site is hazard reduction burnt in stages the volunteers systematically remove the thousands of seedlings that the burning produces. The north third of the reserve has not yet been burnt. We are also mindful that we do not remove too many Cootamundra Wattles if no other Acacia species are present in specific places. The soils are poor enough without having nitrogen-fixers removed!

Thanks for that information. I take your point about balancing woody weed removal with other priorities by ensuring that good replacements are in place. We saw many small bush birds (Striated Thornbill, Silvereye, Superb Fairy-wren, Yellow-rumped Thornbill and Grey Fantail appreciating the food and protection of the Cootas yesterday. They needed it because we counted a flock of 40 Pied Currawong on the Reserve!)
We enjoyed our walk on the Reserve and could see various signs of the Landcare Group's activities, for which we are grateful. We surveyed the birds while we were there and the list is publicly available on eBird.
